Valerie Provines’ daily hikes in the Yuma desert now inspire the majority of her paintings since she moved here a year and a half ago from the Los Angeles area. Sand, rocks, cactus and other plants, gulleys, dunes. She uses what she’s seen to inspire her work after she returns home from hiking. Valerie has abstracted her impressionistic style through the years. She began with oils, then watercolors, and presently, acrylics. Valerie plays with acrylics through layering, scratching, sanding, and incorporating other media into her work like collage, pens, etc. She selects a four-color palette plus white and black before beginning each painting. Another favorite subject is flowers, which she paints from her imagination.
