A Tribute
It was just a little ad in the newspaper inviting anyone interested in forming a group of artists in the Foothills to promote art to attend a meeting on November 18, 1994, at Nancy Carlson's home. With 32 artists present a plan was formulated to form an art club-thus Mountain Shadows Artists Association was "born."
For two years as president, Nancy diligently and skillfully led the club with art shows, workshops and encouragement as it grew and prospered. All the time Nancy was helping others grow in their artistic endeavors, she was also growing and painting beautifully. On January 16, 2005, we celebrated our 10th year anniversary as Mountain Shadows Artists and awarded Nancy with an Honorary Membership for Life in the club along with an etched glass plaque and flowers for all her hard work and devotion to the Arts. Nancy never seemed to realize just what an impact her little ad in the newspaper really had on the art appreciation of the Yuma community. On March 29, 2010, Nancy passed away, but her legacy lives on through the Nancy K. Carlson Memorial Scholarship which is presented to a young local artist each spring. Nancy believed that the talent of the members of MSAA could be utilized to attract, mentor, teach, encourage and assist young artists. Nancy also wished to create an association website and a group page on Facebook to attract more artists. |
